“My name is Vivian Lei. I am a senior at Northside College Preparatory High School, and I will be attending Yale University in the fall of 2012. Also, Harvard University accepted me too but I chose Yale University because it will allow me to have two majors including Art. During my spare time, I enjoy drawing and painting. Pui Ying Art School has been the home that fostered this passion. When I was 5 years old I started taking an art class with my art teacher Miss Li. Miss Li taught me from beginning step-by-step, now I can draw a self- portrait and also draw portraits of other people and painting. This activity stimulates my mind and allows me to express myself through means that cannot be done within the confines of language. Art allows one to escape into a different time and space, much like reading great works of literature or watching a world-class film. However, what sets this process of art creation apart from simply watching or viewing, is that it is a way for one to put their personal experiences and emotions into a story. I take pride in my ability to be able to express myself in this way. Not only am I able to feel a release of emotions, but a beautiful product result. Drawing and painting, coupled with my academic work have helped mold me into a person of many interests and passions. It is with a great sense of pride to see myself excel both academically as well as in my personal hobbies. I am grateful for my experiences at Pui Ying Art School, under the tutelage of Miss Ma Ying Li and they shall be cherished for a long time to come.” --- Vivian Lei
